Gaston County Libraries

A Calm Place for Big Ideas (and Happy Dino Hearts)

Libraries are some of Flossie’s favorite places to roam. No chasing, no roaring… just big ideas, curious minds, and stories waiting to be discovered.

Gaston County is lucky to have 10 amazing libraries, each one offering a welcoming space where kids (and grown-ups!) can explore, learn, and imagine who they might become.

From storytimes and science to creativity and community programs, our local libraries prove that learning doesn’t have to be boring, it can be an adventure! And best of all, libraries are places where everyone belongs.

The TECH at Lowell Branch:
Where Curiosity Gets Its Claws

If Flossie had opposable thumbs, this would be her hangout spot.

The TECH at Lowell Branch (Makerspace) is one of our absolute favorite places in Gaston County! This space invites kids, teens, and adults to create, experiment, and learn by doing. From hands-on technology to creative tools, it’s a place where curiosity is encouraged and mistakes are just part of the process.

This isn’t just a library, it’s a launchpad for future inventors, artists, engineers, and heroes.

Librarian Spotlight: John Dondero

Meet a Real-Life Learning Hero: John Dondero

Every great space needs great humans and John Dondero is one of those people who makes learning feel exciting, welcoming, and possible.

John has a special gift for connecting with kids, encouraging curiosity, and helping young minds feel confident asking questions and trying new things. Whether he’s guiding a project, sharing knowledge, or cheering kids on as they learn something new, John reminds us that kindness and encouragement can change lives.

Flossie gives John two tiny T-Rex thumbs WAY up.

Flossie’s Favorite Things to Do at the Library

Libraries aren’t just for books (though Flossie LOVES a good dino book). They’re places to explore, create, and grow, without needing to roar.

Here are some of Flossie’s favorite ways to spend time at the library:

  • Storytime Adventures
Curl up, listen closely, and let stories take you to new worlds. No time machine required.
  • Learning Something New
From science and history to art and technology, libraries are full of “Aha!” moments.
  • Making & Creating
Especially in makerspaces like the TECH at Lowell Branch, where imagination gets to build things!
  • Sharing Space with Others
Libraries teach us how to be respectful, patient, and kind in shared spaces.
  • Quiet Thinking Time
Sometimes the best ideas grow in calm moments.
Flossie says: “Whether you’re reading, building, dreaming, or just being curious, you belong at the library.
